Action Figure Overview: The Spiderwick Chronicles - Red Cap (Irwin, 2007)

The goblin Red Cap from The Spiderwick Chronicles (Irwin, 2007)

In 2003, "The Field Guide," the first book of The Spiderwick Chronicles,  was released.  The basic premise of the series is that a young boy moves with his family into a creepy old house and discovers a book chronicling the world of fairies, goblins, and other mythical creatures which leads him to discovering the creatures first hand.  Numerous books were released in the successful series and in 2008, Nickelodeon Movies produced a film based on the books.

All four figures from The Spiderwick Chronicles movie toy line:
Jared Grace, Hogsqueal, Red Cap, and Mulgarath

Due to the success of the books and the expected success of the movie, Irwin acquired the license to manufacture a series of action figures that would be based on characters from The Spiderwick Chronicles Movie.  The series included four figures: Jared Grace, Hogsqueal, Red Cap, and Mulgarath.  Although the movie did very well, the toys didn't sell as expected. Now, this obscure line of toys has become relatively difficult to find and as a result, the figures often command high prices.

Red Cap is ready to attack!

One of the prominent characters in the movie is a goblin named Red Cap.  Red Cap is the second in command under the Ogre Mulgarath and the primary antagonist in the film.  With only four figures being produced, it's no surprise that Red Cap would be one of them since he played such a large part in the movie.

Red Cap's arms move up and down when you twist his waist

The Red Cap figure stands about 4.5" tall.  All of the figures were well made and Red Cap is no exception.  The detailing in the sculpt and the paintjob are both excellent, plus the figure feels sturdy.  Each figure in the series has an action feature.  When you turn Red Cap's waist, his arms go up and down in a simulated fighting motion.  Although I could do without this type of action feature gimmick, I will say that it works well and doesn't feel like it will break easily as some figures with action features tend to do.  Overall, it's a well-made toy that does a good job of representing the character from the film!
