Fisher-Price Adventure People: Set #304 Safari (1975-1978)
Fisher-Price Adventure People "Safari" set #304 |
The Fisher-Price Adventure People were first available in 1975. For the next 10 years, this line of well-made 3 3/4" action figures and toys prospered in toy stores. The Adventure People also paved the way for dozens of other 3.75" action figure lines. Not only did they heavily influence the design of Kenner's Star Wars figures, but the original prototypes for the original 12 Star Wars figures were constructed from Adventure People figures. Because they were much more durable than many of the 3.75" action figures that followed, many Adventure People figures can still be found in good condition making most figures and sets very affordable!
Adventure People Safari Mom Pets a Zebra! |
One of the first sets released in 1975 was the Safari set #304. With a total of 19 pieces, it was the largest of the initial releases and one of the largest sets in the entire decade-long run of the Adventure People toy line. The set included an orange truck and matching trailer, a removable double seat for the back of the truck, a red cloth pop-up tent with a solid plastic base that fits perfectly into the trailer, two white animal cages, a cloth fence with a bamboo print, a yellow net, a brown ladder, a brown movie camera, five animals, and four action figures.
The Adventure People Safari Family |
The Safari set included a family of four action figures. There was a photo comic story on the back of the box that named each of them. Safari Jim was the father wearing a tan jumpsuit and a brown hat. The brunette woman in the yellow jumpsuit is simply named "Mom." The teenage girl in the green jumpsuit is "Jenny" I believe, but I've also seen her mentioned as "Jody," so it's possible she went by more than one name. Last, we have Johnny, the young boy in the blue jumpsuit.
One of the main reasons for this set's popularity was most likely the assortment of animals that were included. I suspect that the zebra and the giraffe ended up being used as transportation for figures from other toy lines with better articulation in the legs. I would also imagine that the lion, tiger, and, Gorilla were popular characters with may of the young kids who played with this set. I know that I thought the animals were lots of fun!
Fisher-Price Safari Kids Pet a Giraffe |
The toys in these photos were all mine as a kid. Despite playing with them regularly, they're all in pretty good shape. Sure, there's a little bit of missing paint on some of them, but really these figures held up well to years of adventure!
