Action Figure Overview: Masters of the Universe Classics - Count Marzo (Mattel, 2010)

Masters of the Universe Classics: Count Marzo

Count Marzo is a powerful wizard from the original 1980s Masters of the Universe cartoon who appeared again (with a much cooler look and story line) in the 2002 cartoon. Although the character was in several episodes of both the 80s cartoon and again (as a more prominent villain) in the 2002 reboot, a figure wasn't made for the character in either the vintage line or the 200x line.  However, Mattel's Masters of the Universe Classics line was so successful that they released figures for many characters from the mini comics and the cartoons who had never been made into figures before.  Count Marzo was one of them.

Masters of the Universe Classics: Count Marzo

This figure was (thankfully) modeled very accurately from the 2002 cartoon version rather than the original series version.  They did an excellent job of making the figure look like his cartoon counterpart. From his two-toned black and gray hair that was always blowing in the wind to his red, flowing cape, Mattel really captured the character well with this figure despite re-using many of the pieces from other figures in much the same way that the vintage 1980s figures were made.  However, not all of the pieces were recycled parts.  Obviously the head was a new sculpt as was the cape and chest armor and skirt piece, but they even created a new left hand just for this character!  Count Marzo had an amulet that gave him his great power.  Rather than mold the amulet onto the figure, it was included as an accessory and his left hand was a unique hand made to hold the amulet.  He also came with a sword just like the one in the cartoon.

I noticed two things about this figure while working on this blog that I had never noticed before.  First, there's a clip on the right side of his hip that will hold the sword.  I should have noticed this one and I'm not sure how I missed it.  However, the second thing I noticed wasn't as obvious.  On the back of his belt, under his cape, there is also a clip for the amulet!  I suspect I'm not the only one who missed this since you'd have to either lift up or remove the cape to see it...and then you would also need to notice that it's the right size and shape to hold the amulet.

What do you think of the Masters of the Universe Classics line of figures?  Do you have Count Marzo or figures or any of the other characters that weren't produced before the Classics line?  Tell me in the comments!
